Musicians can use the Hear It Local web application to help find local venues to play it. The app is limited to a few cities in the United States and is not of great use to musicians in other parts of the world. Musicians can also use the app to settle contracts for gigs and manage other aspects of their business. Promoters can also integrate the app with Facebook and Twitter to help promote a local musician or band. Fans of local music can follow their favorite local bands on the app as well. Club owners and managers can use it to book local talent.
Hear It Local was started in 2010 as a platform to promote local bands in San Francisco. The app, fun by Chief Executive officer Matt Lombardi and Chief technical Officer Glenn Shope, started out only in San Francsico and then soon spread to the Minnesota Twin Cities. It started receiving wider coverage from specialized media included TechCrunch in 2012 when it added crowndfunding elements and other features to the app. By early 2012, more than 5,000 local bands were registered with Hear It Local.
Hear It Local is unique in the degree to which it streamlines the music booking process. The app allows musicians to easily manage much of their career. It also makes booking local acts easy for club owners and event organizers. Another unique feature that has won it widespread media coverage is the ability to crowdfund local music concerts.
Using the app is different depending on whether you are a fan, musician or event organizer. The basic format though is similar to many music sites. It allows you to sample local music. if you are an event organizer, it also allows you to contact and of the thousands of musicians and bands registered with the site to book a gig. Musicians can also search through an easy to use directory to find venues where their style of music would be suitable.
To register, you must click the Sign Up button in the upper right hand corner of the app's main page and then fill in user name, e-mail, a password and other information. If you are not a resident of the San Francisco Bay area, it will also require you to fill in a zip code. Note that registration is difficult if you are not a resident of the United States.
The app itself is free to use. Different services, such as booking musicians for local gigs, carry variable fees.
The app is fantastic for musicians, promoters and event organizers in San Francisco or the Minnesota Twin Cities. It simplifies the process of finding local musicians and booking them for concerts. It is very limited geographically and is not much use outside of those areas. Music fans worldwide could use the app to hear samplings of local musicians from those cities, but the registration process makes it difficult to sign up outside of the United States.
